Bellevue Hospital Center
ClimateCraft Supplies New Building
at NYC's Oldest Hospital
with 10 Custom Air Handling Systems
The Situation
The State of New York authorized $196 million in financing for the construction of a 210,000 square-foot, seven-story structure at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan to house ambulatory care areas, patient clinics, surgical inpatient and critical care units. A team comprised of state and local officials, consulting engineers, and architectural and construction firms issued an RFP for an air handling solution, with ClimateCraft as the basis of design.
Bellevue is the oldest public hospital in the United States, dating back to 1736, when New York City was known as New Amsterdam. The hospital treats more than 26,000 inpatients annually, and has nearly 490,000 ambulatory care and 90,000 emergency department visits a year.
The Solution
ClimateCraft supplied 10 factory-fabricated custom air handling systems that deliver 294,000 cfm of supply air.
The 6 primary custom air handlers each provide 40,000 cfm, serve the clinical areas and the atrium. These units perform chilled water cooling, steam heat and humidification.
A mixed-flow return air fain is mounted to the cabinet on the roof of the air handler. By using mixed-flow fans, it is possible to duct-return air directly to the fan for maintaining the necessary output.
The Benefits
ClimateCraft's custom engineering, unique standing seam double wall panel construction and thermal break design have resulted in superior system performance that meets federal, state and local IAQ standards.
Other advantages of this solution are that the units:
- Were easier to install than the ones they replaced
- Will last longer than the ones Bellevue Hospital used previously
- Are easier to service
